Surfergirlbj1My previous post sparked up a conversation which I thought was worthy of posting.
It was brought to my attention that I, whilst not a racist, was actually being racist in singling out the behaviour of a certain group of people.
"the proof is that even marvelous people like you unwittingly enter into racism because its an easy labeling tool.... you do it because countless other people do it". Hat Tip: Milorad
In Australia we tend to talk about a group of people as a separate community - as long as people keep calling them *insert nationality*, they'll continue to feel ostracised and form minority gangs because of their heritage.
When I made my earlier post re the Cronulla and Lebanese problems I had not yet read today's papers.
I am DISGUSTED with the way our local people have retaliated. I mean yeah I was wound up after the life guard attack too, and the media stirred us all on, but to attack a load of mostly innocent people like that is irreproachable. I am almost ashamed to be "surfergirl" today.
I swim at Cronulla on many a Sunday but for some fortunate reason didn't go yesterday. What about the people with young children trying to enjoy the beach yet caught up in a riot?
The level of nationalism in Australia is scaring me - I mean boo-ing at our opponents National anthem when the Socceroos played recently was bad enough. Where is the line going to be drawn, I'm an Australian Citizen but I was born & raised in New Zealand, am I good enough? What "minority" group will be next until the country is so ethnically cleansed that everyone is so alike that we bore the shit out of each other.
Before yesterday's events I thought there was justification to dislike the Lebanese troublemakers:
"You go to Cronulla on a Friday night and you know what happens? You get abused, you get threatened, and you get shitty RnB played out of ridiculous stereos that are only drowned out by the morons redlining their shitty car in 1st gear to make the blow off valve sound. There are constant unwelcome and unsolicited propositions to females to "suck my dick" or "u wanna go f*&k in the back of my Civic."
OK these kids are decadent youth, no matter what their nationality is, they are a major pain and obstruction to many normal citizens who just want to enjoy this gorgeous country that we all share.
In Conclusion:
"if everyone referred to people INCLUSIVELY rather than EXCLUSIVELY, we'd own the problem, own the kids in question, and they wouldnt feel like they were alone outsiders with nothing to lose...
...saying "my kids are little shits" and "those kids are little shits" is very different.
...they are Australian, warts and all... we need to own them.

Here Here to that sentiment.
How on earth that is ever going to happen though, I do not know.
